Destiny, does it exist?

Posted by

The Bible teaches that man was created with the ability to make moral choices and that he is responsible for those choices. God’s word is full of historical examples and scripture that point to this idea. For example, Proverbs 22:8a says, “Whoever sows injustice will reap calamity”. Often, when the Bible speaks of destiny, it’s in reference to a destiny people have brought upon themselves: “Many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their destiny is destruction” (Philippians 3:18-19).

We know that many people in the Bible were called by God. Many obeyed the call (like John the Baptist) while others ran from it (Jonah). Some even began in obedience and then veered from their calling causing them, and those after them, all sorts of problems (King Solomon). God could make us do this or that, but He gave us the free will to choose to do this or that. He loves us and wants us to follow Him because we want to follow Him; not because we are forced to do so.

So, do I believe in destiny? I don’t think that I do. I believe that God created me and has called me to do amazing things for Him. And I choose if I will follow that calling or not, thus reaping the benefits or consequences of my choices. Will following His calling always be easy? Nope. Neither Jesus, nor any of His earlier followers had it easy. Why should I think I’d be any different. Will it be worth it? Yes. I’ve never met a Christian who regret living for Jesus. Doesn’t mean you couldn’t find a few, but I’ve never met any.

So, stop trying to find your destiny and start following God and find you calling! (Raise your hand if you’ve ever taken a Spiritual Gift test! I know I’ve taken quite a few.)
